Christ Memorial Presbyterian Church participated in the 6th annual Hotter Than Thou Chili Cook Off to benefit Bridges to Housing Stability, an organization hard at work on preventing homelessness in Howard County.

Lucas, Noah, Yeketenesh, and I were thrilled to represent our church at this cook off held at the Church of the Resurrection in Ellicott City. We served approximately 225 small cups of chili and raised a decent amount of money in “tips” from folks that enjoyed our chili. We were also able to pass out flyers about Backpacks For The Homeless, our family’s own small effort to do something about homelessness in our community.

It was a wonderful experience participating in such a worthwhile effort, especially as a family. As satisfying as it was, it also opened our eyes to what our family, our church, and our community can do to be more effective in eliminating the issue of homelessness from our county.

HTTCC1We believe our church can expand our own Chili Cook Off by making it a fundraiser. The winner of the CMPC Cook Off can bring the funds raised that Sunday to the Hotter Than Thou Chili Cook Off, as most other participants do. We would also like to see more church participation at the Hotter Than Thou Chili Cook Off, such as developing a theme as a church and fundraising before and during the event.

It was wonderful to be supported at the cook off by Pastor and Mrs. Hoffman, Barb Schmehl, Miriam Miller, Todd Stubbs and Lachlan. It meant a lot to us to see familiar faces supporting such an effort. A big thank you to Todd Stubbs for coordinating CMPC’s participation in the event!
